Interim Packaging Manager - Stepping in When Things Get Overwhelming
The Challenge
One of our clients reached out because their Packaging Director was tied up with endless high-level meetings and strategic projects. As a result, the day-to-day work was starting to slip. They needed a seasoned Packaging Engineer to step in and keep the team moving.
Our Approach
We jumped in as their interim packaging lead and put together a practical support plan that included:
-
Managing a small team responsible for 80 active New Product Development (NPD) projects
-
Overseeing material development and qualifications with converters
-
Running line trials, shelf-life studies, and keeping upper management updated
-
Handling day-to-day packaging issues and jumping in on QC problems as they arose
We worked on a 75% remote / 25% on-site schedule. This gave us the flexibility to run regular Team meetings with the internal teams while still being present at headquarters and plant locations when needed for trials, troubleshooting, or converter meetings.
The Results
After about four months, the company made some leadership changes. We transitioned into more of a quasi-management role, helping guide the team and bringing on additional staff to handle the workload.
We kept all 80+ projects on track throughout the transition until they hired a new full-time Packaging Director. The new director preferred an on-site leadership model, which worked better for their culture. In the end, we helped the client maintain momentum and avoid major disruptions during a difficult period.
