Ideation Session: Turning a New Product into a Clear Go-to-Market Strategy
The Challenge
A client had developed a promising new product they believed belonged in the flexible packaging industry but were unsure how to position it, who to sell it to, or whether they should add headcount to support it.
Our Approach
We held a couple of 1 hour Teams call with the core leadership team to understand the product and what they hoped to get out of an ideation session. We also requested 2 weeks to review the market space, competitors, opportunities that we see in the flexible packaging space, and pitfalls that exist.
The Solution
We organized a full-day, on-site ideation session with 15 key stakeholders from the client’s team. Together, we worked through a structured process that included:
-
Clearly defining the product and its potential value
-
Mapping the current flexible packaging landscape and identifying the best fit
-
Evaluating the most promising packaging formats and product categories
-
Identifying target end users and pull-through strategies
-
Developing value propositions for converters, end users, and consumers
-
Assessing converter partnership opportunities
-
Making clear headcount recommendations — should they hire packaging engineers, field marketing personnel, or both?
The Outcome
By the end of the session, the client left with:
-
A well-defined value proposition for their product
-
Prioritized packaging formats with the highest potential
-
Top 3 product categories to target
-
Specific end-user targets for initial outreach
-
Recommended converters to partner with
-
A clear decision on headcount — they chose to hire Field Marketing personnel instead of Packaging Engineers
This strategic direction allowed the client to move forward confidently. Once the product is placed with converters, those partners can provide the necessary packaging expertise, while the client’s field marketing team focuses on driving adoption and sales.
The client is now actively bringing the product to market with a focused and efficient strategy.
