Redken® Flash Lift Bonder Inside Stand-Up Pouch

In 2017, Redken challenged ProAmpac to develop a completely new stand-up pouch for a groundbreaking 2-in-1 hair lightening product that combined bleach powder and bonder in one formula.

The requirements were demanding: the pouch needed a robust barrier to contain the aggressive bleach chemistry while blocking moisture, survive rigorous drop testing, and efficiently package both 1 lb and 2 lb fills in the exact same footprint. The reclosable system had to include an integrated pour spout, with the cap doubling as a precise measuring cup — all while being highly intuitive for busy salon professionals.

We delivered. Over the following six months, our team designed, engineered, and iteratively tested a high-performance flexible pouch that met every technical and functional requirement. The design underwent extensive internal validation and consumer testing, resulting in multiple refinements before final approval.

Launched in late 2018, the new package was an immediate success. Salon professionals embraced the innovative design, and sales exceeded expectations. The project was recognized by the Dow Packaging Innovation Awards, with the judges noting:

“L’Oréal and ProAmpac reimagined the REDKEN® Flash Lift Bonder Inside to minimize material use and maximize functionality.”

This project exemplifies what’s possible when deep technical expertise meets bold product innovation — delivering a lighter, more functional, and user-friendly package that outperformed traditional rigid formats.

n 2014, two high-growth markets — retail cannabis and laundry detergent pods — were creating urgent demand for compliant Child-Resistant Reclosable Easy-Open (CRREO) packaging. While numerous rigid solutions existed, the flexible pouch category had only one option: a design originally patented by Pactech in 1994 for medical and agricultural use. That early pouch was both difficult and expensive to manufacture, and the market needed a better, more scalable solution.

Pactech partnered with Reynolds Presto Products to develop a next-generation CRREO closure using a slider mechanism. Reynolds Presto was already advancing a child-resistant slider technology, and by leveraging Pactech as a manufacturing test partner, the two companies accelerated development and brought the complete system to market in record time.

The resulting solution combined the new ChildGuard™ slider closure with a proven, pre-approved high-barrier laminate. The pouch successfully passed full child-resistant testing under 16 CFR 1700.20 of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). It was first commercialized in the cannabis market across Colorado, Oregon, and California, then rapidly expanded into laundry pods, clinical drug trial kits, and agricultural chemicals.

This innovation was recognized with two major industry awards:

DuPont Packaging Innovation Awards Committee “This new technology will allow products that had been previously packaged in child-resistant boxes or bulky plastic containers to be packaged in flexible packaging.”

Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) Awards Committee “This new flexible packaging solution opens market opportunities traditionally supplied by rigid packaging.”
