Global Lab Standardization

The Challenge A global client needed all their R&D and quality labs worldwide to perform material testing using the same methods and parameters. This was complicated by inconsistent equipment (missing or obsolete in some locations), varying levels of staff training, language barriers, and significant time zone differences.

Our Approach

  • Perform a comprehensive global inventory of all testing equipment, including its location and condition.

  • Determine which labs would perform specific tests and where samples should be shipped for critical evaluations.

  • Working with the client and examining the markets they participate in, we set out to determine the most critical tests for their product.

The Solution

  • We identified the 35 most critical tests requiring standardization. After getting full agreement from our client, we set out to develop detailed, standardized work instructions including exact test parameters, equipment settings, and procedures. These documents were created in collaboration with internal lab experts and equipment manufacturers to ensure technical accuracy.

  • Each work instruction went through a formal global team review and approval process before being implemented. This rigorous approach ensured consistency across all regions despite the logistical challenges.

The Outcome

We successfully delivered 35 fully standardized test methods. All labs worldwide could now generate comparable, trusted data on the same materials.

This standardization delivered significant value:

  • Reliable comparison of test results across global sites

  • Greater confidence in material qualification

  • Ability to source packaging from multiple geographic regions, reducing costs and supply chain risk

The client gained operational efficiency and substantial cost savings by confidently purchasing locally while maintaining global quality standards.
